The Shinkyokushinkai Karate North West (SKNW) had, once again successfully hosted the 10th Matlosana Cup annual championships on March 5-6, 2022, at the Banquet Hall, Klerksdorp in the North West Province. The Matlosana Shinkyokushinkai under the leadership of the WKO Branch Chief Sensei Thomas Mayekani organized and hosted this prestigious event which started in 2012 at the Jourberton Hall, Jourberton township/location. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 10th Matlosana Cup was postponed in 2021 and only took place this year, 2022 under COVID-19 regulations.

The tournament aims to develop young full contact competitors and to bring together karate practitioners and spectators from different organizations, cultures and backgrounds and share in the benefits and achievements that karate can bring to everyone, such as discipline, determination, dedication and health and well-being of an individual as well as that of the team and the community enlarge.

The tournament was well attended and 310 registered competitors, participating in both junior (under 18 years old) and senior (18 years old and above) weight categories with spectators were allowed to witness this much-loved historic event in Matlosana. The annual tournament has grown tremendously over the past 10 years and has attracted fighters from different organizations across the Southern African region (SADC). The 10th Matlosana Cup was attended by teams from different provinces and full contact organizations such as WKO Shinkyokushinkai South Africa, IKO Matsushima, IKO Nakamura, Kyokushinkan, IKO Matsui (Mamelodi) and Sako Juku from Gauteng, Limpopo, Eastern Cape, North West, Western Cape, Free State, Northern Cape and Kwa-Zulu Natal provinces. The home team a.k.a Team Tom, won a total of 31 awards, with 24 trophies in the junior categories on Saturday, March 5 and seven (07) trophies in the senior categories on Sunday, March 6.

The SKNW branch and the host, extend their gratitude to the sponsors, Twins Hair Salon for the support and Shihan Isaac Mashinini for honoring the invitation and blessing the tournament as a center referee for the final bout in the senior divisions. The branch chiefs congratulated the fighters and the instructors for their commitment to the development and growth of the organization and the sport and expressed happiness with the performance of all fighters, for the great skills and determination they have showed on the tatami. The SKNW host, would also like to thank all those who came to support the event from different organizations, provinces and countries, including parents.
