Dear Branch Chiefs and Contacts,
Thank you for your hard work for the further promotion of Budo Karate. This will be the last newsletter for this year. I believe that all of you are busy with year-end activities, and due to the escalating situation of the COVID-19 crisis, I imagine that you are having to cope with various inconvenient factors. With the mental strength to change emergencies into opportunities, let us focus on our inner selves in our continuous training, and further polish our minds and bodies.

In Japan, we held the 52nd All Japan Open Karate Championship on November 21-22. In a situation where many tournaments were canceled or postponed due to the COVID-19 crisis, we were able to organize a successful tournament, while also carrying out the maximum infection prevention measures. In the organization of this tournament, we were deeply encouraged by the congratulatory messages from Shihan Koen Scharrenberg of Europe, and the officials and competitors of the key regions in the world. The tournament was highlighted by the victory of Kembu Iriki, but all of the competitors that participated fought very hard. Led by the WKO Japan competitors, all Ful Contact Karate competitors did their best in their battles, and I wish to congratulate their great performance. Despite the inconvenient training environment due to the COVID-19 crisis, they never gave up and continued their hard training, and made the decision to compete. As the tournament organizer, such spirit makes us very proud.

On the other hand, this tournament was also a challenge for the organizer. In order to secure the safety and certainty of the tournament in this COVID-19 crisis, new methods were taken, such as the holding of the event without spectators, and the live streaming around the world. The tournament venue was approximately 1/4 of the arena size compared to the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium we normally use, a large meeting hall of 703 square meters. In this limited space, we built a large tatami stage. For the area around the tatami, we did our best to apply measures to minimize droplets. To carry out strict infection prevention measures, while also securing the safety of the competitors that take part in the extremely vigorous Full Contact Karate competition. It is the spirit of the organizer, to combine inventive ideas by the related members and prepare the best stage possible, even in the most difficult circumstances. I believe that this unique connection between the competitors and the organizer, helped to secure a special place in tournament history, and the memory of the fans, while demonstrating a new way of being new. In addition, there were no spectators in the tournament venue, but with the live streaming of the battles to our comrades around the world, in a way, the tournament was supported by the largest number of spectators in the world. My sincere congratulations again to Kembu Iriki on his impressive victory.

I was also able to observe such new challenges by the organizer in Europe, where the infection is reported to be still spreading. The annual Kokoro Cup was held in Poland, the host country of the 7th World Karate Championship in Weight Categories scheduled for 2022. It appeared to be a challenge by the country in preparation for the World Championship, and I enjoyed the online streaming of the tournament. I was deeply moved by the high-level battle between Maciej Mazur, the finalist of the World Open Karate Championship held in 2019, and Paulius Zimantas, the new and powerful competitor from Lithuania. I wish to express my sincere respect towards the competitors who participated in the tournament, and the related members for their hard work in organizing the event.

As WKO, we successfully held the 12th World Open Karate Championship in 2019, and we started our new 4 year cycle this year. Yuji Shimamoto, who won the World Championship for the second consecutive time, opened his dojo in Tokyo, and despite the difficulties related to the COVID-19 crisis, he has started his development of the next generation. The efforts of Maciej Mazur and Kembu Iriki, who will lead the new generation, were also symbolic. As WKO, we have the responsibility to take the leading role in the worldwide standardization of the Full Contact Karate competition. In this worldwide promotion of the competition, the competition level of the various Full Contact Karate organizations has improved at a remarkable rate. This is a good opportunity to reconfirm the importance of developing strong competitors, and it is important for WKO to carry out our responsibility while maintaining a good balance of organizational strength and competition strength. I have high expectations for the various Shihans and Senseis around the world, in their further efforts to develop their competitors with strong passion. Let us do our best and continue our hard work.

Lastly, WKO is an organization we build with our own hands. This was a difficult year due to the COVID-19 crisis. As an organization, we wish to do our best to help each other in such difficult times, and listen to everyone’s ideas and thoughts and value unity. While maintaining a good balance between safety, consideration towards society, and financial stability, we will do our best to support the activities of our Branch Chiefs and Contacts worldwide, and continue our efforts to secure a safe environment where men and women of all ages can learn and train Budo Karate. In order to continue our activities as such organization, I would like for all of us to join hands and take steps towards the future.

I hope that all of you will have an enjoyable and healthy holiday season with your family in your country and region, and I sincerely wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
