The Shinkyokushinkai Karate North West (SKNW) successfully hosted the 2020 Autumn Shinkyokushinkai Tournament, The 9th Matlosana Cup annual championships on 7 March 2020 at the Banquet Hall, Klerksdorp in the North West Province. The tournament aims to bring together practitioners and spectators from different cultures and backgrounds and share in the benefits and achievements that karate can bring to everyone, namely the “DDD” for discipline, determination and dedication.

The SKNW vision is to create a tournament that will dominate the North West landscape and become an inspirational brand for all in the community, nationally and abroad. The Autumn Shinkyokushinkai tournament provided an instructive and positive environment to the youth within the South African and African countries participants. Sensei Thomas Mayekani, the SKNW and WKO South Africa/Africa Region Branch Chief was elated that despite the threat of the novel Coronavirus outbreak, with the first confirmed case in South Africa reported in KwaZulu-Natal Province on 05 March in a traveler who returned from a trip in Italy, and the economic recession facing the country; practitioners travelled from far and wide to grace the tournament.

The tournament was well attended and had registered over 350 competitors, participating in both junior and senior weight categories and the spectators packing the hall to capacity to witness this much loved historic event in Matlosana. The annual tournament has grown tremendously over the past 9 years, and has attracted fighters from different organizations across the Southern African region (SADC. The 2020 Matlosana cup was attended by teams from WKO Shinkyokushinkai South Africa from 8 provinces (Gauteng, Limpopo, Eastern Cape, North West, Western Cape, Free State, Northern Cape and Kwa-Zulu Natal provinces). The following fighters were the Best Performers of the 9th Matlosana cup: 1. Nhlanhla Mathebula, 2. Sibonelo Ncube, 3. Ayanda Dlamini, 4. Sheila Dire.

The SKNW branch and the host, extend their gratitude to the sponsors, Twins Hair Salon for the support and Shihan Isaac Mashinini for honoring the invitation and blessing the tournament as a center referee for the final bout in the senior divisions. The branch chiefs congratulated the fighters and the instructors for their commitment to the development and growth of the organization and the sport and expressed happiness with the performance of all fighters, for the great skills and determination they have showed on the tatami. The SKNW host, would also like to thank all those who came to support the event from different organizations, provinces and countries, including parents.
